Our Initiatives

Akanksha supports initiatives in various spheres focusing on empowerment of women and girls. These range from establishing and managing income generation programme such as the Masala Mathri Kendra to provision of training in computers as well as a school for education of poor and marginalized children. Besides these three established centres, support is provided to many initiatives such as blood donation camps to make available blood for use by poor children and women during emergencies and to homes for mentally challenged women.

Masala Mathri Kendra

The Masala Mathri Kendra initiative established in 1998 is Akanksha’s flagship programme making its contribution to empowering the lives of poor and marginalized women. The initiative was started with a group of only 4-5 women for provision of grounded spices. Today it provides employment to over 100 women and serves an array of snacks and pickles, besides the original grounded spice products.

Keeping in mind the objectives of Akanksha, the Kendra aims at providing not only livelihood opportunities but also facilitates access for overall health and well-being of the women. The workers are provided tea and snacks regularly. Worker friendly atmosphere is ensured through background music and personalized interactions. Medicines, vitamins and calcium supplements are made available to workers. Akanksha also provides micro loans in cases of family emergencies.
